Description

The Assistant Director of Nursing assists the Director of Nursing with the administration of assigned nursing units, including policy development, organizational planning and the direction of the delivery of geriatric nursing care, as well as the development and monitoring of standards of gerontological nursing practices. This position also requires promoting public relations, education and consultation within assigned units.

Essential Job Specific Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director of Nursing in day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department in accordance with Federal, State, and organizational rules, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Collaborates to develop methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services to ensure the continuity of the residents’ total care.
  • Makes recommendations to the Director of Nursing as necessary concerning the operation of the Nursing Department.
  • Participates in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the facility’s Performance Improvement Program as assigned.
  • Admits, transfers, and discharges residents as required.
  • Completes administrative functions, including receiving and recording physician orders; completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies and charts; and accident/injury reports.
  • Attends committee meetings as assigned.
  • Assists in the management of nursing staff.
  • Completes daily rounds of the assigned units to ensure that all nursing staff are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards and Federal, State, and organizational rules, regulations, and guidelines, including the use and disposal of supplies and personal protective equipment.
  • Ensures that all Nursing Assistants are under the direct supervisor of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Reviews complaints and grievances made or filed by department staff and reports as appropriate.
  • Meets with unit staff on a regularly scheduled basis to assist in creating improvements in the service provided to residents.
  • Participate in employee performance evaluations.
  • Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals in accordance with the facility’s policies and procedures governing accidents and incidents.
  • Assists in planning clinical supervision for newly hired Nursing Assistants.
  • Informs nursing staff of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room assignments, etc. and ensure that rooms are ready for new admissions.
  • Greets new residents upon admission.
  • Makes rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Visits seriously ill residents throughout the shift to observe and evaluate each resident’s physical and emotional status.
  • Ensures that direct care is provided by a registered or licensed nurse, a certified or state tested nursing assistant, and/or a nursing assistant trainee qualified to perform the procedure.
  • Reviews nurses’ notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident’s response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident’s wishes.
  • Assists Director of Nursing in identifying areas of improvement and developing and implementing corrective action.
  • Monitors medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled.
  • Informs family members of the death of a resident.
  • Provides direct nursing care as needed.
  • Satisfies all educational in-service requirements mandated by CHI Living Communities, the department, external accrediting, and regulatory agencies.

In addition to the essential job specific duties listed above, the Assistant Director of Nursing shall be required to perform all duties (essential and non-essential) in a manner consistent with the mission and values (compassion, excellence, inclusion, integrity, collaboration) of CHI Living Communities and will be evaluated on such basis. Furthermore, every employee must abide by all campus, departmental, and safety policies, rules, and regulations.

CHI Living Communities has the right to change the job specific duties and specifications required for the position of Assistance Director of Nursing from time to time without prior notice.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited School of Nursing
  • Registered Nurse currently licensed in the state of employment
  • Certified as a Gerontology Nurse preferred. 
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a floor nurse with least one year clinical experience related to geriatric nursing
  • Management experience preferred
  • Currently certified in CPR
