The Respiratory Therapist (RT) provides specialized respiratory care to residents in a skilled nursing facility, including those on ventilators, trachs and oxygen therapy. The RT collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized respiratory care plans to enhance residents’ quality of life and overall health outcomes.
Job Responsibilities:
Resident Care
- Perform respiratory assessments and develop care plans tailored to individual resident needs.
- Administer and monitor respiratory therapies, including oxygen therapy, nebulizer treatments, and ventilator care.
- Conduct diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis and pulmonary function tests (PFTs).
- Monitor residents for changes in respiratory status and promptly intervene or escalate concerns.
Ventilator Management
- Set up, operate, and maintain mechanical ventilators for residents requiring support.
- Perform routine ventilator checks, troubleshooting, and adjustments based on resident needs.
- Collaborate with physicians to wean residents from ventilators and oxygen, when appropriate.
Education and Training
- Educate residents, families, and staff on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and equipment use.
- Train facility staff on emergency procedures, ventilator care, and respiratory therapy techniques.
Documentation and Compliance
- Document all respiratory care interventions, assessments, and resident progress in compliance with facility policies and regulatory standards.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Ensure compliance with all state, federal, and facility-specific regulations.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and care plan updates
- Provide input on respiratory care policies and procedures.
Job Requirements
- Licensed or Registered Respiratory Therapist (LRT or RRT) in Wisconsin.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program.
- BLS and ACLS certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, or geriatric settings preferred.
- Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
